M.I.A. - 2013

This week the Oxford University Press decided that the word of the year is ‘selfie.’ Let’s put aside the societal implications of this announcement for now and just share in a collective head shake. In the age of ‘selfies’, thank goodness for adventurous artists such as M.I.A. She is so much more than Madonna’s sidekick who shocked housewives with a Super Bowl prank. Matangi proves once again that M.I.A. is unique in the world of alternative hip-hop. Her instantly recognizable style and irresistible swag keep this album sounding fresh and she rides above the very slick major label production to deliver songs in a variety of different styles. M.I.A. has always been able to switch seamlessly between singing and rapping which is often a cringeworthy endeavor in today’s hip-pop radio. Most important of all however is the fact the she always sounds honest. You believe her when she sings of love but you don’t question her street cred when she spittin’. This is uncharted territory in modern music as her art doesn’t feel like an act the way it does with so many other performers. The singles and deep cuts on this record should be experienced as a whole so download the new M.I.A. today! Personally, I think the good folks at the Oxford Dictionary got it wrong. They should have chosen ‘olinguito’ as the word of the year. An olinguito is the recently discovered animal that’s native to the Andes Mountains. It’s the smallest member of the raccoon family and unreasonably cute. Yes, This Charming Mammal has people cooing around the world and it’s new name is a delightful tongue twister. Olinguito. Say it three times fast. Go on, you know you want to. I won’t tell anyone you did.
