Random Access Memories

Daft Punk - 2013

There is an indistinguishable fine line between what is good music and what is garbage. I can't define the line, but RAM would be my example when pressed. This is a fahtastic album, but why do I like it? It's mostly a modern disco album. I hate most of that crap. It boils down to the fact that good music is good music. To quote Hesh from the Sopranos, "A hit is a hit". DP pay tribute to their roots on this album and no track displays this better than the standout track, "Giorgio By Moroder", which begins with the man himself telling his own backstory, while DP build an epic track that seemlessly iterates through various styles of music, all bound by common themes. It's nine minutes long, but it feels half that length. As Giorgio says in the voiceover on the track, "Once you free your mind about a concept of harmony and music being correct, you can do whatever you want.”. "Get Lucky" is definitely the song of the year, but "Giorgio" is the triumph of this album. RAM benefits from a mix of electronic disco grooves mixing with live instruments. Having the real bass and guitar tracks is what gives the album the warm that sets it aside from the usual dance fodder. The cameos are all good, and even though there are quite a few of them, the album feels like a cohesive whole. No need to skip through tracks on this one.

This is where I get confused about posting a separate review for an album that's already been reviewed. I want to comment on your review but in doing so I would just be writing what I would say in my own review.

Andrew presents an interesting argument but Discovery was infinitely better than Random Access Memories so the point is probably moot.

Fair question And. Comments are for fun discussion, and to make the review process more interactive. Maybe point out that you like or dislike a certain take on an album. Does the reviewer make a point that you hadn't thought about? That kind of thing. Also, just plain smack talk. The reviews should be more in-depth hopefully.

Plus, the point is that it's YOUR ten that you're compiling at the end of the year. You couldn't include DP in your ten without posting your own review. And given the length of your reviews Andrew, the comment section probably isn't the best spot for them. (I love that they're long and well thought out by the way)

In short: the album is not as good as some weird part of me that whats to give it credit for, does so. I'm not sure that makes sense but I'm going to let that sentence fester a while and come back to it in a few days.
