Hold Time

M.Ward - 2009

When I first listened to Hold Time, I wrote it off as boring. (The near perfection of Ms 2006 release Post-War may have heightened my expectations) When I returned to the album months later I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was dead wrong. The album is anything but boring. Ms signature breathy vocals float amongst each chord progression, bobbing and weaving through his acoustic guitar. Lyrical themes of god, death, and loneliness run throughout, all with Wards unique poetic stamp. Lucinda Williams gravely voice sounds more Marlboro-soaked than ever on Oh Lonesome Me, drenched in strings, piano, and self-pity. Ward has been on a roll the last few years with The Monsters of Folk & his duets with Zooey Daschanel. Hold Time continues that roll and leaves you wanting more. (standout tracks: Epistomology; Fisher of Men)
