Live at the Cellar Door

Neil Young - 2013

Live at the Cellar Door offers wonderful performances by an artist on the cusp of greatness in 1970. It’s a selection of classics performed solo on acoustic guitars and piano. Each song is presented in its purest form and the results are stunning. The Live at Massey Hall album from the same era offers a similar set but it can’t touch the intimacy of these recordings. You get the feeling from the Massey gig that the stage fans have Young’s flowing locks billowing dramatically behind him as the much larger audience eats up the nonstop banter. The listener enjoys a far more personal experience on Cellar Door. The focus here in on the music and not Young’s infamous showmanship. Basically, you get a Pepsi sponsored half time show from Massey Hall. You get whispered secrets with Cellar Door. This is a superb addition to the endless treasures of the Neil Young bootleg collection.
