The Diving Board

Elton John - 2013

Sir Elton’s in fine voice on The Diving Board. Bernie supplied a great set of lyrics. T-Bone Burnett’s typical stripped down production is spacious and features John’s stellar piano playing. The songs are reflective and passionate. There are strong melodies, beautiful piano interludes, and warm back up vocals throughout the record. Plus, the album finally avoids the disappointing Elton John formula of the 90’s-00’s (3 killer/the rest filler). So why then the three star rating? The Diving Board is thick. It’s a long and dense listen. You’re either wading through the mire of mid tempo rockers or enveloped in strained minor ballads. In addition, some of the songs sound remarkably similar to others on the album. Overall, The Diving Board sags beneath it’s own weight and offers no real relief. It’s an intriguing affair at times but ultimately keeps the listener at arm’s length.
