Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures - 2009

In honestly didnt even occur to me that my top two selections this year are from supergroup collaborations. While M.O.F. sounds like The Traveling Wilburys channeling god, Vultures sounds more like Cream using jackhammers as instruments. Dave Grohl has entered the Jack White territory for me, in that everything he gets involved in can be trusted to be quality. Vultures finds Grohl back behind the drum kit, Josh Homme (Queens of The Stone Age) on guitars and vocals, and John Paul Jones (formerly of a little band, the name escapes meoh well not important) This album releases shotgun blasts through your headphones. Its an aggressive power trio, hell bent on MAKING you listen. While the testosterone flows, there are moments of complex arrangements, odd time signatures, and psychedelia that make for an interesting listen from start to finish. (standout tracks: New Fang; Gunman)
