Death Grips - 2015
Fashion Week is an album of instrumentals that are mostly pulled from Death Grips’s upcoming album, “The Powers That B”. It was released for free, without notice, because…..well…this is Death Grips. There are two main reasons that I listen to Death Grips. The first is Zach Hill’s drumming, which is still present here, and the second is MC Ride’s vocals, which of course are not. Death Grips without MC Ride is like (and this will be a weird comparison, I know), Sammy Hagar era Van Halen. It’s not horrible and it has it’s moments, but overall it lacks the magic of DG.
It was free and unexpected, so I won’t complain about it, but I’ll rarely ever listen to it. Given how much music Death Grips puts out, there is plenty of the real thing to go around. They also just mentioned online that they’ll probably keep putting out albums despite announcing their eventual breakup before their planned opening slot on the NIN/Soundgarden tour, so hopefully I’ll have less and less reason to come back to Fashion Week.
