How Big, How Blue, How Bloody Awful.
How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
Florence + The Machine - 2015
I knew perfectly well that Flo and Co had no intention of recreating the bombastic brilliance of their sophomore masterpiece Ceremonials. However, HBHBHB is a truly monumental letdown. The group continue to drift ever closer to standard pop/rock with this lackluster outing. Welch’s performance on this third record is mostly to blame. She has fallen into the standard pitfall of newly successful vocalists. Simply put, her melodies are pitched considerably lower than usual. Her strong upper register has been replaced with lazy comfortable singing. No push, no power, no passion. Enjoy the first two tracks because the vast majority of these recordings are polite, pedestrian, and pointless at best.
PS Beware of songs with killer whales in the lyrics. It worked for Bjork, M. Ward, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Roots but they went all all Blackfish on Neko Case.C. Scott Back
