Sol Invictus

Faith No More - 2015

It’s hard to know what to expect when you’ve waited nearly twenty years between albums from one of your favorite bands. People change so much over that amount of time, not to mention trends and sounds in music in general evolve. Can that artist recapture the magic they once had? Will they escape the nostalgia factor that makes returning bands sound dated? Do they even have anything left worth saying? Thankfully Faith No More answered most of those questions with a yes on Sol Invictus.
One of the things that FNM have on their side is that they have always been original and unique, so there was no chance that they’d "sound like the 90’s” on their return. They sound exactly like FNM sound. They have pounding drums, funky, thumping bass, anthemic keyboards, and Mike Patton’s brilliant insanity.
"Super Hero” is the standout track for sure. It’s a killer single that belongs on any FNM playlist. Other tracks, like “Separation Anxiety” remind you of the FNM of old, with Patton going full-on freakout. Throughout the rest of the album are decent songs that, while not standout tracks, they at least are worthy of listening.
Overall “Sol Invictus” is a strong return for a band that was missed badly over the last 2 decades. Hopefully the success that they’re having with this album and tour will be encouragement enough to record their next album.

I've listened to this album a couple of dozen times now and it gets better with age. I'm not sure I'd bump it up to a 4 star rating yet, but it's a grower.
