Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit

Courtney Barnett - 2015

Courtney Barnett’s album is one of the most overrated albums of 2015. It will be on most top albums lists, and way up high at that. While I don’t find it deserving, I get it. She does have a talent that’s tangible. Her lyrics can be throw aways at times, but when she’s telling stories in her songs they are quite compelling, and that deserves to be rewarded. The problem is that when she’s not achieving that level of interest in her songs, she’s not that much more than a modern Sheryl Crow. The album’s production is a bit of an issue for me. It strikes me as trying to be gritty in a Nirvana In Utero kind of way, but filtered through a radio friendly unit shifter. (see what I did there) I could see where her live shows could be good, given more grit and less gloss.
