Portishead - 2008

Portishead’s aptly titled third album is by far the most challenging release of any major band in 2008. The album makes you feel as though you are dropped in the middle a desolate, icy, locale with nothing surrounding you but miles of frozen tundra. What the hell am I talking about? I don’t know, which is exactly what I’d say about the album, but in a good way. Portishead leave behind most of the sexy trip hop of their debut for the most part, while composing songs with samples and loops that leave you intrigued. At every turn there is something new to hear. Reverb soaked guitar mixes with intricate rhythms to back Beth Gibbons’ melancholy melodies. After this album you’ll need a hug.
