Cat Power - 2008

A covers album, led off with “New York, New York”, sounded to me like a recipe for disaster, but Jukebox floored me when I first heard it. Chan continues the jazzy-country soul of The Greatest on this album of nearly unrecognizable covers. Tackling the songs of others is not always a wise choice, and to choose songs by some of the most influential, iconic figures in music history is almost certainly a death sentence. Jukebox sports covers of James Brown, Joni Mitchell, Hank Williams and Dylan, all painted with Chan’s warm, sexy vibe.
