Tales Of Us

Goldfrapp - 2013

Goldfrapp is slowly becoming one of the most underrated music duo's of all time. It's starting to actually become a crime for sure, that no one is paying more attention to their musical chameleon-like, consistently innovative and reinventing ways. Hailing from London, Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory have consistently put out stellar, stunning, and beautiful music since 2000 in the form of 6 albums. Tales Of Us (2013), the sixth album in their dynamic discography, is certainly a stand out among their work. Actually, it's my belief that 'Tales' is too be their second greatest effort behind 2008's, Seventh Tree (a top ten album of all time for this reviewer). Goldfrapp's forte is and will always be Alison Goldfrapp's voice and in 'Tales' as in 'Seventh Tree', her voice is the high point of every song. Having been called 'dreamlike' on this album, it truly stands out for its ethereal quality. It's an auditory drug that makes it impossible to stop the album. The songs themselves are tales of a different person, their name being the title of each one. The raw and real emotive quality of each stripped back string and overall accompaniment is powerful in every possible sonically seductive manner. Gone are the up-tempo dance tracks of their previous album (2010's Head First). Instead, they have been replaced by moving ballad-esque portraits of people. For me, this is the first album of 2013 that upon first listening, I have not been able to deny my ears it's magic everyday, almost non-stop.

This is our first five star review of any album from 2013! I'm not sure what that says about this year in music but I'm looking forward to experiencing Tales of Us!

Ummmmmm....I have changed my star rating. Got a little to rush-to-judgement in my rewarding of the full five stars. My opinion concerning this albums excellence has not altered, just the amount of stars given to it has.
