The 1975

The 1975 - 2013

Alright, I'm officially joining the bandwagon. I hereby openly confess my appreciation for this self-titled debut despite the comprehensive ridicule that I'll suffer at the hands of my best friends. I have tried to justify this guilty pleasure in several different ways. I told myself that they're not unlike their Aussie counterparts Cut Copy. I noted the debt that this band owes to New Order and Coldplay. In the end, I just couldn't help bopping along to 'The City' and having a little sulk with the adolescence of 'Sex'. Anyway, I first became interested in the group following a Tiny Desk performance by Matthew Healy. It helped me to understand that behind the shimmering production of this album there is a talented young songwriter who can pen a catchy tune. Having said all this, I have zero expectations for the artistic growth of this group. I fully expect them to enjoy their fifteen minutes and then dive directly into the bargain bin faster than Third Eye Blind. Yes, there's every chance that this delightful pop confection will age as poorly as forgotten produce and yes, I'm bound to look back on The 1975 in February of next year with a mix of embarrassment and confusion but I think we all need to admit to ourselves and each other that sometimes one hit wonders just happen and there's very little you can do when a song like Chocolate melts into your brain and sticks in your head for days. Viva the youthful yet anesthetized pop/rock of The 1975! Get In!

O.k. Yeah Its good solid pop, and great production on this album. As for where will they go next? Bargain bin or compelling next album? Do they even need to? Plenty of bands made one record many times over and had careers, (AC/DC, your tables ready ) I'd check out there next, uh, cause i have a crush on all of them.

You make a good point Carl! I'd be happy with another album of similar tunes by this good looking bunch of Mancs! Can we add 'The Ramones' to your list of bands that wrote one record many times? Nothing against the punks of course! They found a winning formula that lasted 20 years!
