We Got It From Here...

A Tribe Called Quest - 2016

When I was younger, I used to think that I was a hip-hop connoisseur simply because I listened to A Tribe Called Quest. Midnight Marauders was, still is, and will always be my favorite hip-hop album of all time with no other album coming close to its brilliance. That is until We Got It From Here came out this year. (Yet another double album makes it into the top ten - see #2 on the list.) I honestly don’t have the words to craft an explanation as to how incredible this album truly is. It sounds like, but doesn’t sound like Marauders. That’s about as good as I got. Socially conscious, well thought out, non-cliche lyrics? Tick. Mesmerizing beats of all sorts? Tick. Hooks galore? Tick, tick, and tick.

Unfortunately, the album cannot sustain throughout, the high quality that is on show for most of the sixteen tracks. Sometimes the members of Tribe disappear completely, with guests taking over tracks, which although always on-point, makes me wonder - why have those tracks at all, if not showcasing the last words of Tribe, and in specific, Phife Dawg? Regardless of some low points, this album is by far and away the best hip-hop album that has been put on there in god-knows-how-long.

Highlights include: “Dis Generation,” “Kids,” “Black Spasmodic” (has one of my favorite lines - “Used to sell drugs out the challenger”), “Ego,” “Lost Somebody,” and any time Busta Rhymes shows up to dominate a track.
